RESEARCH

WHO IS JIM LAMBY

Jim Lambie is a contemporary artist as well as a DJ/musician for the band Teenage Fanclub.

He frequently uses lines to create bright patterns with combinations of 7-9 colours.

The materials he uses are mostly pop culture related objects and vinyl tape to create his elaborate floor designs. His floor designs typically highlight the architecture of the buildings they are in and their intricacies.

1ST PASS

For the first pass I went with a clean grid that was more organized. letters scattered over the composition to create balanced chaos.

2nd PASS

The final composition is more balanced and makes the type feel more unified. The type before was also too small and illegible. In this version the legibility is clear and the colors pop.

exploration

environments

Due to the nature of the piece, nature environments are important. I tested outa few options that felt interesting to incorporate into the piece. Ultimately the misty forest was the best fit because of the contrast it gave the type. There is also a tie to the original environment where the installation is placed. A misty forest on the side of a house.

Final

the result

I really enjoyed animating this! If I were to work on this longer I think the folds could be exaggerated and have an overwhelming moment of color on screen as they unfold.
